Inside Mount: 3 Easy Steps to Measure

A precise measurement is the key to a perfect fit. Inside mount motorized cellular shades sit inside your window frame for a clean, built-in look.

Step 1: Measure Window Recess Depth

Before measuring width or height, check the window recess depth to ensure enough space for the headrail.

    • Minimum Required Depth: 2" (5 cm)
    • How to Measure: From the front edge of the window opening (closest to the room) to the deepest point inside the recess.

    Tip:

    1. For smooth shade operation, your window recess should be at least 2" (5 cm) deep.
    2. For recess depths under 2" (5 cm), choose an outside mount. See our Outside Mount Measurement Guide for details.

    Watch for Obstructions

    Common window obstacles include:

    • Window handles
    • Locks or latches
    • Cranks or winders
    • Trim or frame details

Even with a deep window frame, these obstacles may prevent the shade from closing properly.

    Measure with Obstacles

Even if your window recess is deep, handles, locks, or cranks can interfere with installation or stop your shades from closing properly.

To determine the unobstructed recess space, follow these steps:

    1. Measure the total recess depth from the front edge to the window glass.
    2. Measure the distance from the window glass to the obstruction (e.g., handle or lock).
    3. Subtract the obstruction depth from the total recess depth to find the clear space.

    Tip:

    1. To ensure smooth operation, your window recess needs at least 2" (5 cm) of unobstructed depth.
    2. For unobstructed depth under 2" (5 cm), choose an outside mount. See our Outside Mount Measurement Guide for details.

    Step 2: Measure Window Width

Windows are rarely perfectly square, so measure in three spots to get the most accurate width for your motorized cellular shades:

    • Top of the window recess
    • Middle of the recess
    • Bottom of the recess

Record the narrowest measurement. This ensures your cellular shades fit snugly without rubbing or binding.

    Step 3: Measure Window Height

Measure the height of the window recess at three points:

    • Left of the window recess
    • Middle of the window recess
    • Right of the window recess

Record the shortest measurement to guarantee a perfect fit, even if your window isn’t completely level.

    Outside Mount: 2 Simple Steps

An outside mount fully covers the window and can block more light. This is ideal if you want maximum privacy or light control.

    Step 1: Measure Width

Measure the width of the area you want to cover. For full coverage and to prevent light gaps, we recommend adding 2–3 inches (5–7.5 cm) on each side beyond the window frame.

    Step 2: Measure Height

Measure from the top of the desired coverage area to the bottom edge. Allow at least 2 inches (5 cm) above the window frame for mounting brackets.

Measuring tape straight in window recess to avoid angled measurements or bent tape

    Avoid These Common Measuring Mistakes

    • Fabric tape: Use a steel measuring tape instead of a fabric one for accurate results.
    • Glass-only measurement: Measure the full window recess, not just the glass area.
    • Self deductions: Don’t make your own size deductions — we’ll adjust during production.
    • Missed obstructions: Always check for handles, locks, or trim before taking final measurements.
    • Angled measurements: Always measure straight along the window recess, not at an angle.
    • Bent tape: Keep the measuring tape flat and straight for precise readings.
