3 Easy Steps to Measure for Sleep-Guard Shades

    how to measure window deepth

Step 1: Measure the Recess Depth of Your Windows

Before measuring the width and height of your window, check the usable depth inside the window frame to ensure your motorized shades will fit properly.

Minimum Required Depth: 1" (2.5 cm)

    How to Measure:

    1. Measure from the front edge of the window frame to the back of the recess where the shade will sit.
    2. If the recess has angled or uneven surfaces, measure only the flat area where the shade frame can be installed.
    3. If there are variations in depth, record the smallest measurement to ensure your shade fits perfectly.
check for obstructions in the windows recess

    Watch for Obstructions

Common obstructions inside the window recess may include:

    • Window handles
    • Latches or locks
    • Winder mechanisms or cranks
Measuring window depth while accounting for protruding handles and hardware to ensure enough clearance.

Avoid Obstructions for a Perfect Fit

Handles, locks, or cranks can block your shades. Ensure a smooth fit with these steps:

    1. Measure total recess depth: From the front edge of the window frame to the back of the recess.
    2. Obstruction depth: Measure the obstruction depth from the front of the window to the front of the obstruction (e.g., a lock).
    3. Calculate unobstructed space: Subtract the obstruction depth from the total recess depth to find the space available for your shade.

Important: You need at least 1" (about 2.5 cm) of unobstructed recess space for smooth operation.

How to measure window recess width

    Step 2: Measure the Width

Because window openings are not always perfectly square, measure the width at three points:

    • Top of the recess
    • Middle of the recess
    • Bottom of the recess

Use the smallest of these three measurements to ensure the shade fits the narrowest part of the opening.

Note: Please do not make any deductions. During production, we will reduce the width by approximately 1/8" (≈3mm) to allow for proper clearance and easier installation.

How to measure window recess height

    Step 3: Measure Height

Measure the height for window in three places to account for any uneven surfaces:

    • Left of the recess
    • Middle of the recess
    • Right of the recess

Use the smallest measurement to ensure the shade fits the shortest part of the opening.

Note: No need to adjust the measurement yourself. We’ll reduce the height by about ⅛" (≈3 mm) during production for an easy fit.

Measuring tape straight in window recess to avoid angled measurements or bent tape

    Avoid Common Mistakes

    • Don’t measure on an angle. Always measure straight across the inside of the window frame for the most accurate results.
    • Keep your tape straight and flat. A bent or sagging tape can lead to inaccurate measurements.

    FAQs

A: It’s simple! Measure the exact opening of your window frame in three places: the top, middle, and bottom for width, and left, middle, and right for height. Provide us with the smallest width and the smallest height. Our Smart Sizing system will handle the necessary factory deductions to ensure your shades glide smoothly.

A: The recess depth is the flat "ledge" space inside your window frame. For Sleep-Guard shades, a minimum depth of 1" (2.5 cm) is required to secure the aluminum frame. This ensures the unit fits snugly inside the opening for a clean, integrated look.

A: No. Please provide the exact net measurements of your window opening. Do not make any deductions. Our production team applies a precision factory deduction (approx. 1/8") to the width to ensure the aluminum frame fits perfectly. If you subtract the dimensions yourself, the gaps may be too large, leading to light leakage.

A: Absolutely! If you’re unsure about your window shade measurements, send your details to service@kurlax.com.

Our team will review your numbers and confirm before production to guarantee your custom window shades fit perfectly.

💡 Tip: Include a photo of your window recess with your measurements. This helps our team quickly verify depth, width, and height for an accurate fit.
